Dakota Language classes started on Wednesday, February 8th, at Eastman Hall from 6 pm to 8 pm. Redwing Thomas, Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska, was available to teach classes for the Dakota Language. Twenty-four people from the community of Flandreau attended and five were children of participants.
The Dakota Language classes were very well received and attended in 2009 & 2010 by the community. Redwing Thomas has taught Dakota Language classes for the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebrask and Flandreau.
The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe hopes to develop full pledged language program and look into grant funding and recruiting and maintaining attendance for this project. It is also hoped by the Dakota Language Committee that this will help our people preserve our language and teach the younger members to learn their language & culture.
If you are interested in learning the Dakota Language, the classes will be held every Wednesday night from 6pm to 8 pm at Eastman Hall.
Board members are Everett Weston, JB Weston, Andy Weston, Renata Schroeppel, Jim Bill Ross, Phillip Allen, Warlene Yellow Cloud and Vine Drapeau. This is a community effort to teach the community the Dakota Language. Everyone that wants to can help with the classes is welcome.
The goal is to find grants to fund the program so we can pay a full-time instructor and focus on 4 levels: Day Care Centers and the Boys and Girls Club to teach the young ones, grade school level (go into the public school system), Adolescent group of 12 years old on up to become teachers of the language and hopefully start a cultural program.
The Dakota Language classes will help the community learn and revive the language to produce conversational Dakota speakers. The Tribal Community is welcome to attend class every week. -Editor (photos by Renata Schroeppel)
